Is Account-Based Marketing Dead? A Reflection on Two Decades of ABM.
Account-based marketing (ABM) stands at a pivotal crossroads as it celebrates two decades of redefining the B2B marketing landscape.
Despite research showing that 71% of companies will increase ABM spending in 2023 (ABM Benchmarking study, 2023), recently, I have observed a curious shift: some companies, tempted by the comfort of vanity metrics and a lighter lift, are retreating from ABM back to traditional demand generation strategies, prioritising leads over the nuanced approach of targeted account nurturing.
A shift, perhaps, not without merit. Recent research (Global State of Account-Based Marketing, 2023*) shows that marketing leaders are under increased pressure to generate immediate pipeline and accelerate opportunities, and while ABM programs are performing, it is a longer-term strategy, and there's a big gap when it comes to driving substantial impact where it matters most: revenue growth.
So, is ABM dead?
No, it is very much alive. But it requires a fresh infusion of strategies that make it less of a heavy lift while augmenting its impact.
Two potent ingredients in this revitalisation recipe are the infusion of brand experience and thought leadership, paired with the technological leverage of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI).
Brand experience and thought leadership are potent catalysts that can transform the essence and efficacy of ABM strategies. When integrated into ABM, brand experience turns every interaction into a memorable encounter, making the brand more relatable and engraving a lasting impression on the customers. It becomes less about the products or services sold and more about the values embodied and the problems solved.
Thought leadership amplifies this impact further. It solidifies the brand’s standing as an authority and innovator in its field. This positions the brand not merely as a seller but as a ‘value creator’. By embedding thought leadership into ABM, personalised at an account level, the message becomes richer and more credible. And it works. Recent research showed that 60% of senior executives rely on thought leadership to make better, more informed decisions (Value of B2B thought leadership survey, 2023*).
Now, no article these days can be written without a mention of AI, but for ABM - when well used (!) - it has become a game-changer. GenAI is the much-needed lever that scales ABM strategies, making them more agile and less cumbersome. With GenAI, customising content, analysing and predicting customer behaviours, and automating various aspects of the marketing process become more efficient. This not only helps in personalising the customer journey across more accounts but also in making real-time decisions and adjustments that enhance the overall strategy.
In conclusion, ABM has a bright future; it’s evolving, navigating the pressures and complexities of the modern marketing and business landscapes. By embracing a renewed strategy infused with brand experience and thought leadership bolstered by AI’s technological prowess, ABM can deliver a powerful, relevant impact that resonates with immediate objectives as well as long-term goals,
The enriched ABM that emerges is more dynamic, engaging, impactful, and aligned with the rhythm of today’s client and business expectations.
